Edward Berger-directed ‘Patrick Melrose’ Wins Four BAFTAs
Edward Berger-directed Sky/Showtime co-pro Patrick Melrose has been awarded with four BAFTA awards: Best Mini-Series and Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch at the Television Awards, and Best Production Design and Writer: Drama Awards at the Television Craft Awards.
“Edward Berger is an amazing director,” said Patrick Melrose Executive Producer Michael Jackson, while accepting the award at the BAFTA’s on Sunday 12 May.
“I think I’m going to fall over,” added Benedict Cumberbatch on stage. “I breathe rarefied air, but I’m very used to being a bridesmaid, not the bride.”
For Edward, getting the chance to direct Patrick Melrose was “the biggest luck of my life.” Based on a series of novels by Edward St. Aubyn, the show follows the life journey of the title character Patrick Melrose (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) who was abused as a child, struggles with addiction and heartbreak, and seeks redemption. Berger directed all five episodes of the Showtime limited series, and he considers Melrose “one of the most interesting characters” ever written.
