An Expat Gingerbread man travel home for Christmas in an ad by Australia’s David Jones.

Animated Travels From TBWA/Sydney and Sweetshop’s Mark Albiston

Australia’s largest department store chain David Jones is the latest retailer to debut its Christmas campaign, with an animated spot that centers on an expat Aussie gingerbread man traveling home with presents for his family. Set to the track “Everybody’s Talkin’,” the 90-second film sees the gingerbread man ticking off items on his gift list as he visits London, New York, Paris and the Alps, and almost coming to a nasty end as he gazes through the window of a chocolate shop.

Thankfully, he’s rescued by a mysterious figure (Santa?) who mails him back to his gingerbread family in Australia.

The spot is by TBWA Sydney and Maud and directed by the Sweet Shop’s Mark Albiston. The computer generated character was created by Alt.vfx in Sydney and Brisbane, in conjunction with Steve Sharp at Imagineer London. The wider campaign includes gingerbread family-themed windows in David Jones stores.

Last year’s David Jones Christmas campaign featured Cate Blanchett, but this year it appears to have taken a leaf out of the fantastical, magical style book of U.K. retailers like John Lewis and Marks & Spencer.
